About Us

Growing Up in Britain is dedicated to keeping alive the memories of everyday life in Britain during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.

For many of us, these decades shaped who we are. They were years of ration books and rock ’n’ roll, of corner shops and cassette tapes, of washing lines, tin baths, and Saturday morning cinema. Each generation remembers them differently, but together they form a shared story of a country in the middle of change—when old traditions met new freedoms, and when childhood felt simpler, even if times were not always easy.

This site is a place to revisit those moments. We collect the stories, objects, adverts, TV shows, schooldays, toys, sweets, and family rituals that made up everyday life. From Action Man and spacehoppers, to school milk and the football pools collector knocking at the door, we celebrate the small details that instantly transport us back.

Our aim is to bring together memories from people who grew up in those years, whether you were a child in the 1950s, a teenager in the swinging sixties, or starting work in the 1970s. You’ll find articles, pictures, and conversations that spark recognition and remind you of times gone by.

GrowingUpInBritain.co.uk isn’t just about looking back—it’s about sharing. We encourage visitors to add their own recollections, compare notes, and pass on memories to younger generations who may never have queued for broken biscuits, watched television on a flickering black-and-white set, or danced in flared trousers at the local disco.

By remembering together, we keep the spirit of those decades alive.

Early-Decade Elegance and Tailoring In the early 1960s, British women still leaned into that crisp, polished look from the ’50s—think neat skirt suits, simple A-line dresses, and hats you just had to wear if you wanted to look proper. When Streets Were Playgrounds: Outdoor Games We Played in Britain

Before mobile phones and video games took over, kids spent most of their free time outside.
